This is not really a klarinet issue but the subject is so musically strange that it's worth a moment of your time to see what is happening in the world of far out opera.

This link will take you to a review in the NY Times (by chief critic Anthony Tommasini) of a new opera produced in London just a few days ago. The title (and the subject) is "ANNA NICOLE," the rather infamous Playboy centerfold who died recently of a drug overdose. Her full name was Anna Nicole Smith and if there is someone on this list who has not seen her naked, you must have been asleep for the last 20 years when she exposed everything to everyone under all circumstances. She was tall, statuesque, incredibly erotic, and bleached.

The review calls the work brilliant, saying, "It proved a weirdly inspired work, an engrossing, outrageous, entertaining and, ultimately, deeply moving new opera. This was an improbable triumph for Covent Garden."

Since I once played in the band of a burlesque theater in Newark, NJ (and fell in loved with Candy Barr, of blessed memory), I have had some modest experience playing hootchie kootchie music, or, as Tommasini said, "Va-Va-Voom Goes the Soprano."

It's a brand new operatic world out there.

Dan Leeson
