Subj: [kl] case hip belt

I'm trying to devise a more ergonomic way to carry my clarinets on my back.
This is motivated by recent back problems. Unfortunately one can't seem to
purchase a clarinet case with a proper hip belt; the problem is that a
typical clarinet case is just too short. (In contrast, one can readily
attach a hip belt to say, a bassoon case.) Some possible solutions:

- Add metal extender*s* to the case and mount a hip belt on the
extenders. I'm not sure if there's enough metal/plastic to securely fasten
screws. (I have a BAM Trekking case.)
- Carry the case in a hiking backpack with an internal frame. This
distributes the weight more efficiently to the hips. The downside is you
need a pretty wide pack, and it's awkward to get the case in and out.
- Combine a clarinet case with a hiking backpack. I've tried mounting my
case on an old external frame pack, but it was awkward because the weight is
too far from the body. Alternatively, one might be able to remove part of
the bag from an internal frame pack and sew the case to the remains. (I've
heard of people making camera cases this way.)

Has anybody tried any of these options?

-Chris
