I am in a quandary. Next week I am to perform the Prokofiev
Summer Day suite as arranged for woodwind quintet by Clark
McAlister. There is a version on Youtube as well as an
orchestral performance and a piano performance (the original
is for piano) and I have listened to all of these.

My concern has to do with measures 10 and 26 of Evening in
the quintet version. Our oboist is concerned about a strong
dissonance between the clarinet and the oboe at the
beginning of these two measures (concert A sharp against
concert B natural over a G in lower voices.

The dissonance seems good on the piano version. It seems
missing on some performances and subdued in others. It may
be an intonation problem. It could be a difference in
temperament. At rehearsal we changed the clarinet pitch to a
concert a sharp (!). The result seemed very tame to me.

Any suggestions?

Dick Williams
