As a lifelong sufferer of eczema on my hands & fingers, where it leaves
deep cracks in the skin - and as a professional bass guitar player in a
previous life - may I recommend against that? The cortisone cream by
itself should be good enough after a few days; I would wrap my fingers
in plastic wrap (under a doctor's instructions) overnight after applying
cream, but I found that putting them under a covering more than just
overnight would cause the skin to thin out more than acceptable. Reapply
the cream at least daily - the coating might prevent the adsorption of
the cortisone.

Now granted, bass guitar takes a bit more callous on the fingertip, but
the thinning might be detrimental to clarinet playing, too.

The eczema has luckily been in control more or less for the past 20
years ... I used to have to replace guitar strings often because blood
is pretty corrosive on the metal strings.
