I shudder to think that some of the suggestions re: 'barrel ring removal'
may actually be attempted, and end-up in tragedy. Do no attempt to use a
pliers to remove the ring (some body and barrel rings are plastic!), unless
you want to ruin the ring and endager cracking the barrel socket. Do not use
chemical solvents or lubricants. The rings are generally friction-fitted
after being shrunk to size on a ring shrinking press. After being shrunk,
the ring has a taper to its fit; in other words, you cannot replace the ring
either way, there is only one correct way to place the ring on the barrel
(larger diameter first, as the edge of the ring going-on first has a slight
chamfer on its leading edge). It is the practice in most professional repair
shops to carefully strike glancing blows around the edge of the ring with a
soft leather or delrin hammer. Do not strike the barrel material (wood,
plastic). This method will cause the ring to work itself off slowly, and is
easily removed by hand. Also, do not pry between the ring and the barrel
with a screwdriver or any other sharp object, this will only bugger-up your
barrel.

BTW, topics like this, and any other repair quandries may be discussed with
other players and professional technicians by joining our Musical Instrument
Technician group on Yahoo. All interested parties are cordually welcomed. Go
