You don't mention what kind of wood your barrel is made of. The only barrel
(knock on....wood!) that I've ever cracked was a cocobolo barrel, with metal
rings, not a Backun, on which I played too much in the first 24 hours after
I got it. My guess is that certain woods, being less dense or more porous,
require a more gradual break-in period. As far as fitting goes, it's only
TOO tight when there is wood-on-wood contact. It's better to have a little
room for contraction or swelling, especially with a new clarinet or barrel.
