Reminds me of a concert in which an oboist noticed a huge crack in her oboe. Actually it was more like the instrument splintered. The crack was so wide, you could see the oboe's gnarly innards and entrails if you had the stomach to look into the fracture.
The oboist immediately unwrapped a piece of gum, chewed if for a few seconds and with the gum, plugged the crack, which was about 5 inches long and 4 cm wide.
Got her through as well!
Poor girl - the following night as she was playing a soft English horn solo in an orchestra concert in a church, her English horn cracked and the notes stopped coming out.
We heard the crack. It was like a loud finger-snap but with more "ping". Until then, I thought hearing the sound of a crack as it occurred was a myth.
