When I entered college in 1961, my mother bought my HS graduation gift
through Hewgley's in Nashville. They had to order it from Selmer Paris,
because I wanted the (almost) full Boehm set. I didn't get the Eb/Bb,
because my HS teacher and my potential college teacher seemed to agree
that that key caused tuning problems and made those notes "fuzzy", anyway.
She paid $600 each for the Bb & the A Series 9*. I thought that was an
incredible amount of money -- and I guess it was, in those days. But I
played that set through college, grad school, orchestra, chamber, and
ultimately, a couple of community bands, after I retired, -- almost 50 years
-- so I guess I more than got her money's worth out of them. I'd stil be
using them, but the neuropathy from diabetis has locked down my fingers.
[sob] (I still love Selmer!) The Bb decided to develop a crack in the
top joint through the RH trill keys. Had it glued and strapped, and never
any other problem. (People used to comment on the cute silver band,
wanting to know how they could get one. <g>)

No matter how much things change, they always stay the same. <g>
