One of the shameful secrets that I keep hidden in a closet is that,
after nearly 40 years of clarinet playing, I still exclusively use
throat-tonguing. It has certainly served me very well, in that I am
principal clarinet in our community band and do a fair amount of pit
orchestra work, but I always feel like I should be embarrassed when we
get a new member with real clarinet training.

Looking back on it now, I realize that my junior high school band
director tried several times to tell me how to tongue properly, but at
that time I just didn't get what he was saying. It didn't make sense.
Now, it's too late.
