Music is soothing and healing to me. I don't know what I would do if I wasn't playing. I play in a community orchestra now and will be starting with another in a couple weeks. I, like Kathy, have some mental health issues (bipolar disorder among other things), and I find that I need music.
I'm a self-proclaimed theory geek and it calms me a lot of the time when I listen to a piece I'm paying attention to things like chord progressions and different cadences used (big fan of the deceptive cadence - I use it when I write). It bites me sometimes in that I have a tendency to block out the words and focus on the theoretical structure.
