Dan says:
<<I speak about doubling of bass clarinet with E-flat clarinet,
something found in the Mahler symphonies, and also in contemporary
music.>>
It was exactly this situation which got me initially interested in
mouthpiece work. At the time, my position in the Toledo Symphony
required a lot of switches like this.
I went to see Elmer Aiello, who was in charge of mouthpiece production
(and a lot of other things) at Leblanc in Kenosha WI, to get
mouthpieces to ease the switch between Eb, Bb, A, and bass. He made me
mouthpieces that all had a similar "bite", which really helped me a
lot. In the process, he gave me my first lesson in mouthpiece
refacing.
