Thanks for showing that my memory hadn't failed me. This is kind of fun.

It does seem odd that Art Blakey would be quoting a 19th century German
author, though he apparently did-- in Ken Burn's "Jazz". I looked up
"washes away the dust of everyday life" and found that some attribute it to
the last words of Pablo Picasso ("art washes away the dust of everyday
life"). Maybe Blakey heard the quote through some connection to Picasso who
got it from Auerbach.
