Hi Richard!
I too have done these doubling gigs in the pit; one show (I think it was 'Pippin') I did all these & flute too ! When I was younger I used to cope I think adequately - I kept getting the jobs - but I couldn't do it now. I think I was lucky in that as an army bandsman in the sixties I was rotated round clarinet, E flat, Bass Clarinet, Bass Sax !!!, alto sax, flute, and finally bassoon. This meant that by the time I'd been on an instrument for a couple of months my pay packet would suffer if my playing was less than adequate, but our camp was miles from anywhere and there was so little to do but practise that I was quite glad of the incentive; and of course there was always first class tuition available. My embouchure was more adaptable in those days!! The experience was invaluable later when I was a woodwind coach for Cumbria Music Service.
Hope you are keeping well.
Martin

I just played a pit gig where I had to play clarinet, bass clarinet,
bari sax and bassoon. Among other things, its a lot of reeds to keep
wet. I guess the bottom line is just to practice.
