Klarinet Archive - Posting 000154.txt from 2011/01

I went to NAMM on Saturday. I did try the Backun clarinet. He has made
a lot of mechanical changes in his design from the traditional
instrument including automating the use of an extra tone hole for the
F/C that at least one recent clarinet has had an extra key for. This
mechanism was attached to the register key which was stiffer than what I
am used to.
The surprise for me was that it appeared that I could play quite a bit
louder in the clarion (which would be a good thing) than with my R-13.
However, without having my own instrument for comparison, I couldn't
tell how much of it was where I was sitting and how much was the
instrument.
This was really the only thing of interest I saw at the show. I didn't
see anything of interest on the bass clarinet front which I have been
keeping an eye on for several years. Aside from Backun, I only saw
Selmer, Leblanc, and Buffet professional clarinets on display. Some of
the smaller manufactures that used to come to NAMM (like Patricola) have
not been there for at least the past 2 years.
