Dear Kathy

Do not be discouraged. I do think you are barking up the wrong tree with th=
e stairway to heaven type of imagery though. Perhaps this is why you have d=
ifficulty connecting with your students? Your response to the music is pers=
onal to you, others may not identify with it in that way. I think what we n=
eed to try to do is find the core of the music, a kind of universal truth r=
ather than a personal one which may be influenced by other factors which ha=
ve nothing to do with the music whatsoever.

When I was growing up our family had no money and we didn't have any real f=
riends either. My parents worked hard to do the best for their 5 kids but e=
motionally there wasn't much time for us. When my dad bought me a clarinet =
for =A320 from the local junk shop I discovered music and all my emotional =
needs were met. I practised so hard because I was feeding off the emotional=
responses I could get from the music. It was not until many years later I =
realised that this was damaging and stunted my own emotional growth with hu=
man beings. Music is artificial. It doesn't actually say anything to us emo=
tionally in that way. It has the ability to be used by us in that way thoug=
h.

I would encourage you to take a more intellectual approach, more structural=
and geometric if you like. If you combine this with your obvious feel for =
the effects of music I think you will gain even more from it. Don't use it =
as a drug though!

Best Wishes

M
