Because of the difficulty of the trombone part, the line is often given to
other instruments. Sir Thomas Beecham always had a cello play the part.
And sometimes, if the bassoon was strong, the line was given to bassoon 1.
But those local idiosyncrasies were unrelated to what Mozart explicitly
called for. I'm surprised that no one has given the line to a tenor sax.

As for the number of times that I played the Requiem, I was in a
particularly advantageous position. I owned two excellent basset horns at
the time that most players did not own any. I stopped counting when I hit
about 200 performances, and that did not include rehearsals. All that began
after I moved back from France in 1962.

It was never boring or tiresome. I would do three Nutcrackers and never
want to hear it again. But not the Requiem. I could do 20 a day and still
want more.

Dan
