I believe that, until Beethoven 5, trombones were thought of as reserved for
sacred music. I don't know why, though.

Additionally, throughout the requiem, the chorus and/or the soloists
are mirrored or doubled by four instruments in order - the first two
basset horns for the women, the alto trombone for the tenors, and the
tenor trombone for the basses. Since the bass soloist is the singer
for that number, and there are no trumpets in the requiem, the tenor
trombone was it. BTW, since they are both cylendrical instruments,
and the tenor trombone has exactly the same range as the bass
trumpet, it is no great stretch to use the trombone there.

And yes, it was the only chromatic brass instrument of the time. In
fact, I've often wondered why it wasn't used more in baroque and
classical orchestral music. It only seems logical, and yet both horn
and trumpet are used far more.
