I live in a fairly dry climate (current indoor RH of 39%) and mold is very
uncommon. However, I have been storing the reeds in a Rico reed vitalizer
pack (73% RH version) and that should be sufficient to support mold. I
moisten reeds almost exclusively using water. I like the suggestion of using
an alternative moistening method for the two unused reeds. The others are
headed for the trash.

I am able to scrape off the dark material with a knife edge, although the
scrapings are too small to see any detail. If I had a microscope, that would
probably clinch it. Curiously, no other reeds have been affected, so it's as
if the mold came with the reeds (at no extra charge) but it has not spread
to any others.
