I would agree with Martin except for the fact that a barrel with rings will
have thinner walls at either end than a barrel without them. Before
tightening the rings, however, I would suggest trying to humidify a slightly
shrunken barrel. I've noticed that, on the instruments I play every day,
the rings virtually never become loose.

I've been using the Backun Ringless barrels for several years. Never had one
crack. Maybe the value of rings is over rated.
