That "charlatan" (this is a joke, for the humor impaired!) of the repair business, Hans Moennig, regularly shimmed loose barrel rings, using strips of paper from the telephone directory. He once repaired a ring for me that had been shrunk by a local repair tech, and advised me not to allow that to happen again. He even showed me how to do the shim work myself, and if properly done, it's a good solution. The danger of shrinking the ring is that once the weather warms up and the humidity expands the wood, the socket can get stuck on its tenon and become difficult to disassemble.
