Yes, that's wrong: according to Pamela Poulin, the first documented use of the basset clarinet by Stadler is Feb 20 1788 in Vienna; the programme reads: "Herr Stadler, the older, in the service of his Majesty the Kaiser will play a concerto on the Bass-Klarinet and a variation on the Bass-Klarinet, and instrument of new invention and manufacture of the K. K. instrument maker Theodor Loz [sic]; this instrument has two more low tones than the normal clarinet."

She further says that the first performance of K581 was given by the TonKunstler-Societat on Dec 22 1789 at the K. K. National Hoftheater for the benefit of the organization's widows and orphans. Anton Stadler played clarinet and Zistler played first violin.

Of course, that doesn't in itself prove that Stadler used the basset clarinet in that performance of K581 -- or indeed, subsequently -- which is why performance of K581 on the basset clarinet has conjectural status.

My own choice is the basset clarinet -- but there is some evidence the other way, and I suppose Sabine inclines that way for that reason.
