Not sure if you picked up on the original thread, but I do practice scales with the music, precisely because it trains the eyes to pick up key signatures and patterns, making sight-reading a whole lot easier. I also practice my Jean Jean for whole tone work.

With regards to eyes and fingers not aligning with each other, my philosophy has always been to practice the piece so much that it is 90% memorized and the music on the stand is merely a reference. Partial memorization is almost mandatory in 20th Century music. You don't want to be relying on the atonal or heavily accidentalised score in front of an audience if you are already nervous.

I have a playlist on my YouTube channel which follows the progress of the Bozza Caprice Improvisation which would be an interesting study for any student.
