Some have commented that excess movement is 'distracting' and some have sai=
d =

that they don't mind.=A0 Tony Pay said that Meyer, herself, once said to hi=
m, =

"Yes, I know I move too much."

If one is moving so much that fellow musicians are 'distracted' or that the =

conductor is 'distracted', then one=A0must learn to=A0move less.=A0 If a te=
acher tells =

a student in a lesson that they are moving too much, the student should try=
to =

understand why the teacher says so.=A0 I understand that I may move too muc=
h in my =

own playing.=A0 I am not a high level player, and when I am playing somethi=
ng =

challenging, I become tense; I can feel the jerkiness in my torso and leg.=
=A0 So =

part of my own learning is to be smooth and efficient in movement, at a fin=
ger =

level and at a whole body level.

However, I don't see that any of this applies to a player of Meyer's or Fro=
st's =

ability.
As an audience member, I have enjoyed Meyer's playing very much, and I don'=
t =

understand where the line is between 'playing' and 'moving'.=A0 I had read =

discussions like this before I saw her play the Mozart Quintet, a few years =

ago.=A0 I was interested to see and hear her.=A0 Like many of us, my experi=
ence of =

music is mostly from listening to recordings. A live performance is a pleas=
ure =

for many reasons, including seeing the performer.=A0 Seeing a player's move=
ment is =

part of the experience of that performer.=A0 I understand that Meyer may mo=
ve more =

than is comfortable for some; I may go to performance next week in which I'=
ll be =

'distracted' by some player moving.=A0 But=A0in general, I think movement i=
s a =

natural part of making music, and I like to watch.
