Well thank you Jennifer; I was hoping that I hadn't upset you. When disagreeing with someone else's opinions I think it is all too easy for me to sound too critical, especially as the subtle shades of meaning carried by British use of the English language and those carried by American usage don't always co-incide. Someone once described us once as "two nations divided by a common language, and of course we have the complications of Canadian, Australian and other versions each of which carry their own cultural "sub-messages" if I may invent a term for it. Congratulations also to those members of the list for whom none of the many variations of English is their native language yet who still manage to raise so many pertinent points.
