Dear Tony,
What an excellent article! It should be required reading for every woodwind player.
I'm sorry I can't identify the author of the quotation. I first heard it from Bill Tulip, who taught me piano at Kneller Hall in 1959/60, ( and did not agree with it ) but I have heard it several times subsequently. I have always been under the impression that it was originally from Beecham, but can offer no evidence.
Regards
Martin Baxter
