Whether my ears are more 21st c or more 18th c is difficult to say. Physiol=
ogically they are millions of years old; nature moves slowly, which, I thin=
k, is good.
Society develops rapidly, with attitudes and predilections. As far as those=
are concerned, mine are definitely closer to the 18th c than to those of m=
y contemporaries. Most peoples mind today is deformed by constant exposure =
to senseless noise and futile gibberish. =

When I first heard Hacker's recording of the Mozart quintet (the first "per=
iod" version I ever heard many years ago) tears were running down my cheeks=
, it moved me so deeply. Suddenly, the piece was there. Balance, delicacy, =
transparency, subtlety, liveliness, it breathed=85
Since then I have heard many "period" performances, some good, some bad, an=
d played on period instruments myself. But I could never go back to the hea=
vy weight rumble of modern instruments tearing old music to pieces. In that=
respect I certainly agree with Tony, it is a moral issue, doing justice to=
the work. But for the ultimate goal of advancing aesthetic sensibility, i.=
e. reason.

Best regards,
danyel

s on the list.
