Danyel's latest rant (below) doesn't really deserve a response, but needs one

First, "bassett" is just a description meaning a "miniature bass" - independent of keywork & even instrument - (e.g. a bassett nicolo is a tenor crumhorn or shawm)

I agree that Meyer's movements look a bit ridiculous (and I also prefer the more interesting sound of the earlier instruments played by competent players)
- but it's infinitely more ridiculous to claim that she & Frost are "totally incompetent because they don't even play the proper instrument".

I also agree on the need for a sense of history - So how does Danyel classify players of previous generations like (e.g.) Leopold Wlach, Gervase de Peyer Simeon Bellison, Reginald Kell to name just a few - who didn't play on the "proper instruments"? - or Romero, Mazzeo and others who designed their own instruments? ("totally incompetent"?)

As for clothes (and gestures, which have nothing to do with the quality of playing) - "rotten taste" is a matter of opinion. Frost's outfit, for example, is remarkably restrained compared to Scandinavian national costumes which are an integral part of a very old culture.

Plenty of first rate musicians have had to make a living some or even all the time playing fourth or fifth rate music. Consider how long it took for Afro-Americans to be accepted by the classical establishment, whose irrational bigotry (& I suspect, jealousy in many cases) excluded them. Finally consider someone like Louis Armstrong, whose late career as an entertainer was embarrassing and cringe-worthy but could never diminish his status as one of the greatest most innovative musicians. Ever.

... just make sure you don't look and move like her, not even 1:1000!

Really, watching this and listening to the appalling noise makes me sick.

And, by the way, I suggest we don't call this a basset clarinet. I have a very similar instrument (a-clarinet, full oehler to low C), it's nice, but only if you write modern music for it. The term basset clarinet should be reserved for the real thing, like Tony Pay, Neidich or Hacker, i.a. play. It's an historic instrument.

Frau Meyer not only looks ridiculous (almost as bad as Frost), they both are totally incompetent because they don't even play the proper instrument. Let alone articulate or phrase in a historically informed way. We live in an old world and need to cultivate a sense for history. "Musikanten" (as opposed to real, i.e. learned musicians) we need as badly as jesters and clowns. I know, some people on the list will be offended and maintain, the said "virtuosi" had so much "musicality" etc. But that's irrational and irrelevant if the player can't even pick the right instrument. We are not talking American Idol, this is Mozart! Of what kind the alleged "musicality" is, I don't know. But I can tell by these peoples clothes and gestures that they have a rotten taste and hence no culture.
