Jennifer,
I play with musician earplugs, the kind you get from an audiologist,
not the local drug store. For the clarinet, you need to have them
drilled with a small hole. The earplug manufacturer should know what
to do. The earplugs come with several different filters so you can
pick the one that works best for you. The sound that I hear is
somewhat flat sounding - not flat in the intonation but flat in the
harmonics. I use the lightest filter that came with the earplugs but
it does help when the clarinets sit in front of the trumpets. I have
hearing issues, including tinnitus, from years of playing in large
ensembles and I don't want my hearing to get worse. My audiologist
suggest that every musician wear earplugs in order to save their
hearing.
