Subj: [kl] Clarinetist Martin Frost

Last night I heard a radio performance of the first movement of K. 622 by the young Swedish clarinetist Martin Frost. It was a magnificent performance with the Amsterdam Sinfonia. Absolutely knocked me out.

It was a bit fussy on one over-elaborate occasion (in the second Eingang), but the good qualities so overshadowed his few infelicities, that I am awestruck by his exceptional playing. He played a basset clarinet, and he improvised here and there, thereby making his performance of the concerto quite unique.

I have been out of the clarinet business for long enough not to know who is coming up, but some of you will probably know him better than my one movement experience.

That guy can play very well, though I can't say too much more without more experience. I believe that he holds the position of guest professor at the Swedish Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
