That's a 419 scam. From article 419 of the Nigerian Penal Code.

Yes, Sean, this absolutely REEKS of scam, to wit:

1. The m.o. is all too clear -- it's a form letter, basically, not at
all specific about the item that they might want to buy (it doesn't
matter, they're not interested in what you have for sale, they are
interested in getting YOUR money).

2. The "global shipping company" is going to come to your house to
pick it up THE SAME DAY their check clears your bank. Putting aside
the degree of fancy footwork it would take for that to happen [how do
you KNOW for SURE ahead of time when the check will clear?] I will
bet you that if you responded and engaged in a transaction with this
person, somewhere along the line he would discover that somehow the
check got made out for a great deal more than the transaction amount,
and he can't get another one, or has already sent it, or some such,
and so would you please just go ahead and deposit this check, and give
the courier from the "global shipping company" the balance, thank you
very much.

3. And then of course the check proves inauthentic, and your bank
can't make good on it from the maker, so they make good on it from
YOU, and you are out the cash AND the merchandise that you supposedly
sold (which you will probably find in the nearest public trash bin).

No, I don't think this guy is after your identity. I think this is
just another of the endless variations on the same scam that you
mention.
