The point is to all be in tune with each other, REGARDLESS of the reference
point. If the whole orchestra can play in tune with each other at A=600 so
be it. But it is best for the reference to be consistent, so that
instrument manufacturers know to what standard to build, and players won't
need different instruments to play in different groups.
