Alvin, I am merely quoting the letter. Fernando ,contrary to your statement=
all instruments are not built to A=3D440Hz; the Vienna Philharmonic plays =
at A=3D448 I believe and the Zuleiga systems oboes that Yamaha made for the=
m are built at a higher pitch than A=3D440; I assume it is A=3D448.

The Galpin Society does have a website, and I think that there are also oth=
er members who subscribe to this list; one of whom may be able to give more=
information. you could also try Graham Wells (grahamwhwells@-----.com) who i=
s the Society's Chairman and archivist.
You could also consider joining the Galpin Society. Apart from the authorit=
ative Journal they do hold meetings in the US (often jointly with AMIS) and=
in various other parts of the world.

Hi Martin,
The first problem I see is all the instruments we have today build to play
442 or 440... Can you imagine all Orchestra all over the world changing, for
example, percussion instruments to change pitch? I do not think it is a
'practical' thing.
But another thing concerns me more: all of us were educated with 440 or 442
pitch on mind. Should us put aside all our pitch referential and achieve new
one? Is it so easy like that??

Following the recent thread on pitch it is interesting to see Prof.Nikolaus
Harnoncourt's letter in the Galpin Society Newsletter N0.28. He advocates a
pitch between A=3D430 and A=3D435. He is asking for comments and research
results prior to a conference in Vienna. Also he mentions that certain
singers now refuse to perform in Vienna because of the high pitch there and
makes the interesting comment that the reason for pitch 'creep' is that in
any chord with bad intonation this is caused by certain notes being flat
rather than by others being sharp. Intriguing idea what!!
