Is this Newsletter online or available to non-members? I'd be interested in
more detail about his explanation for "pitch 'creep.'" I generally think of
"pitch creep" as an upward tendency. It would be interesting to read how
flat chord members drive the pitch upward. Many players, when they hear that
they're part of a badly tuned harmonic setting, seem automatically to assume
they're flat and adjust sharper. Is that what he's talking about or is it
something else?

Subject: [kl] Orchestral Pitch
Following the recent thread on pitch it is interesting to seeProf.Nikolaus
Harnoncourt's letter in the Galpin Society Newsletter N0.28. He advocates a
pitch between A=430 and A=435. He is asking for comments and research
results prior to a conference in Vienna. Also he mentions that certain
singers now refuse to perform in Vienna because of the high pitch there and
makes the interesting comment that the reason for pitch 'creep' is that in
any chord with bad intonation this is caused by certain notes being flat
rather than by others being sharp. Intriguing idea what!!
