The above link consists of a series of reminiscences of the Houston symphony's former 1st oboe player, Raymond Weaver. He apparently wanted to publish a book on the matter but it never came off. Eventually, his notes went to one of his students who gave them to the editor of the article, Robert Stumpf.

What is particularly interesting are the comments on Stokowski, Sir John Barbarolli, and several other legends in the conducting business.

There is even an anecdote to clarinetist Roger Hiller who went from the HSO to the Metropolitan opera. I worked with Roger at the festival in Chautauqua, New York during their summer program. It was (and is) a fabulous place to be. It is something that one would seriously consider doing without charge, so splendid are the circumstances of that festival. I think their current principal clarinetist is Eli Eban who is a joy to hear.
