I play in two wind orchestras and the clarinets seem to always sit in
front of the trumpets. I wear special musician earplugs that I
purchased from an audiologist. They are custom made and I purchased
two different filtering strengths. When I play bass clarinet, they
don't affect my hearing myself or others at all. When I play Bb
clarinet, it does somewhat sound like I am playing in a barrel. I can
hear the rest of the group well enough that I can blend, both loudness
and intonation. I already have hearing problems from my years playing
in large groups and I wear them so I don't get any worse. Audiologists
recommend that all musicians wear them.
