Subj: [kl] Recent news about Patricola

Dear all,

I've been visiting the Patricola brothers a couple of days ago and had
the chance to play six B-flat instruments, which is a big number for
them (I was lucky, because they were preparing for an exposition).

Apart from the quality of their clarinets, which is great, I was
surprised by the amount of changes which have been made since my last
visit (months ago). The changed (again) the register key (positioning
of the cylinder and shape of the shutter), modified the shape of the
second-last hole on the bottom right side, created two new barrels and
two new bells. One of the barrels is not provided by default (the old
ones are not sold anymore, though they have few hundreds of them ready)
and the two bells are available as option (note that the default bell is
relatively new, having been designed about one year ago).

Given that they have a single line of clarinets (not different models,
nor quality categories), and that they sound great, it's really a good
thing that they are still trying to improve. A bad test may imply
loosing one piece of an instrument and, when the testing is done on the
bore shape (as happened a couple of times in the past two-three years),
it implies loosing an entire instrument. Still, they carry on tests
from time to time and take this risk. I love this :-)

BTW, the last changes are really minor things. They are the sort of
tiny differences between "This is a great instrument!" and "I cannot
live without it!". I hope you have a chance of playing them.

Cheers,
Diego
