Some years back a 6-piece clarinet ensemble (all London freelancers of the
highest quality) called The Clarinet Section gave a concert of fantastic
arrangements of Ravel and Debussy sounding sweet and beautifully tuned.
Suddenly above the Eb we heard the sopranino Ab - but who was playing
it? Alan Andrews was still clutching his alpine-horn version of the
contrabass, which had been playing up till then: he had the Ab to the side of
the longer tube, and after a few delicate bars he returned to the bass-line,
nestling the Ab in the right-hand between his thumb and first finger, still
able to play the contra! The embouchure switch must have taken a little
practice .. They made a great CD, by the way. Cheers, Colin.
