Hi Dan,
Ivo PAPASOV is probably the foremost exponent of Bulgarian Rom
(perjoritively called 'gypsy') wedding music. He is truly amazing,
and has three fabulous recordings out. HIs style, however is wilder
than traditional Bulgarian folk music, in that his band sometimes
turns the rhythms around (backwards) and also re-accents within the
meter. Bulgarian (and most Balkan) music is often in "odd meters"
which can be expressed as combinations of 2 and 3 note groupings. For
example, the first tune on that CD (Orpheus Ascending, right?) is a
dance called a "Rucenica" - pronounced ROOTCH-en-EET-sa. It is in 7/8
(some say 7/16) with the groupings of 2+2+3.
I played for 12 years in such a band in the Washington DC area, and
got somewhat proficient in Balkan music. The ornaments are pretty
hairy to learn, and much of it is improvised, so you have to learn to
improvise in odd meters. Luckily, there are only chord changes if you
want there to be. I've played tunes in 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and
15. If you want, I'll write out the groupings and tell you the names
of the dances that go with the tunes.

I have no idea how anyone would dance to this band's wedding music.
It makes my head go dizzy trying to find the downbeat. Igor Popov and
his Bulgarian wedding band. I salute them all.
