It sort of makes me think of pictures 14 through 18 at:

The clarinet on the far right in the article is larger though.

I guess it must be a contrabass clarinet, though I can't see any
indication of that in the article. I conclude that because of its
size and by eliminating the other instruments and Dan's indication of
the instrumentation. Still can't find information about the
instrumentation through google searches. The same picture occurs at:

http://www.bethcuster.com/clarinet_thing.html

and there is no eefer in that picture. That site does mention a
contrabass alto clarinet, which I can't find any information about
either. I am having trouble making sense of the name. Is a
contrabass alto clarinet a clarinet with an unusually large range?
i.e. spanning the alto, tenor, bass and contrabass ranges?
