There is a very lengthy article in the NY Times today, but limited to the Bay Area of California, which means the area surrounding San Francisco.

The subject is the "Clarinet Thing" which consists of a quartet: clarinet, basset horn, bass clarinet, and contrabass clarinet. I quote the first paragraph of the article:

"Since the end of the big band era, the clarinet has taken a backseat to its sexier woodwind cousin, the saxophone. But in the Bay Area, thanks to a fertile environment of classically trained clarinetists with experimental sensibilities, the oft-overlooked instrument is having a moment."

The link above should take you to the article, but since its presence is only in the Bay Area edition of the NY Times, no promises are given.
