Also a duet for clarinet and bass clarinet, in which both instruments go
into A in one movement. I am anxious to contact him as I think he's the only
living composer who called for the A bass, even if it was 60 years ago!

Did you ever play any of Schuller's own works? Some of them are fairly
complex beasties themselves -- he being fully trained up in serialism as
well as having a deep love of jazz.

It's been a long time since I listened to any of his stuff, but I have
very fond memories of a concert in the QEH where Joe Lovano played a
"Third Stream" piece Schuller had written for Eric Dolphy -- bass
clarinet and ensemble, with fairly complex modernist musical writing
combined with extended improvisation by the soloist. Actually IIRC
Lovano reproduced Dolphy's own improvised solo as well as extending it
with improvisations of his own.

There's a little solo clarinet piece Schuller wrote for William O. Smith
("Episodes") which is full of multiphonics and other new techniques (no
improvisation) -- I have it on my shelf, but the technical demands are a
bit beyond me ... :-(
