PS: (& apologies for typos) - Schuller's "The Swing Era" is brilliant, but since he was a young musician during the era, he sometimes gets overly nostalgic (I think he overrates the later Ellington band among others).
By contrast, "Early Jazz" contains pure and sensible unbiased analyses.

Thanks Tony, - Even better, *first* get hold of Schuller's earlier book called "Early Jazz".
It's a great antidote to all the rubbish that's been written on the subject by musical illiterates.
(For example) his discussion of the early Ellington "jungle" band and Bubber Miley (the trumpeter) in particular, who "made" its whole sound (for example) is absolutely brilliant.
At some point Schuller mentions that he was aiming for a trilogy .. still waiting for third volume.
I've necver come across anything involving Schuller that wasn't absolutely first-rate, and he's been involved in a huge diversity of musical activities.
cheers
Tim

Thank you, Tim, and others who replied to my question.

I shall certainly get hold of Schuller's book. I remember playing Martino's Triple Concerto with the London Sinfonietta and him conducting, and was amazed at his detailed knowledge of this complex score. And this in a man who was responsible for introducing me to Scott Joplin...
