Brad,
Considering the cost of overhauling it (upwards of $250, and even
more if dents have to be taken out), and the fact that it is probably
a student-level instrument, unless you are wanting to learn how to
repair instruments, I wouldn't bother. You can buy a comparable
quality plastic instrument used for that amount (or even possibly
less!).
If you want to learn, there is at least one program, which lasts
about 2 years, to teach woodwind repair. Or you could apprentice with
a willing repairman.
Either way, I echo David. There is an enormous amount of knowledge
necessary (not to mention special tools and supplies) to put an
instrument in playing condition. You can't just jump into it any more
than you could just decide to rebuild your car's transmission.

I have a cheap clarinet that I want to play but it needs some heavy

So my question is, where on the web or in libraries do I go to find
out about the nuts and bolts of re vamping re padding, re bending keys
and taking the dents out of a old beater. It's a metal clarinet that
been used occasionally as an offencive weapon.

I have the time and the inclination but no money and I am curious
about the arcane clarinet insider knowledge. So where do I look?

Thanks Brad
