Surely, it depends what 'sound' you want to achieve. I was fortunate enough to hear Husnu Senlendirici on his last visit to the UK. He uses these pickups (I think one of the ones originally mentioned) - and puts the output through some sort of octave splitter which he brings in and out when he feels like it. His G clarinet often sounds like some sort of weird violin. I couldn't believe that his performances would have the same sound as his recorded work, but they were precisely matched. A beautiful, amazing sound - but one that deliberately degrades some tonal qualities in order to achieve the sound he really wants. To my ears it was definitely 'quality sound'. So - perhaps the original poster could give some hint of what kind of sound he is aiming for... and Benjamin, with his expertise, might give more focused advice (I have saved several of his previous postings).

I think, by the way, that it is an entirely appropriate question for this list, and even if it is of no interest to the many people who wouldn't dream of amplifying their own sound, there's no need to suggest that it is somehow wrong for someone else to do so.

Untrue.... Nothing destroys a sound like poorly done amplification. You
want quality sound, you aren't going to get it from any of these products.
A pickup on a clarinet is like a pickup on a stringed instrument. It sounds
nothing like the instrument in real life in a room.

There are plenty of ways (many of which I've discussed on this list- do a
search) to get good amplified sound out of a clarinet. It may not be cheap,
but it can be done. The best way to do it really depends on what you are
trying to get out of the amplification and the type of group it is.
