Ben, I agree
my claim was a bit glib,
...but the trouble is that most amplification *is* poorly done

The main trouble is that very often you (the player) can't hear what you're playing

As you point out, quality amplification is an expensive and requires as much skill as good playing, so it's rare.

And at least if you use a microphone, you can control your volume a bit by moving (towards/away from it) - not so with a fixed pickup.

I don't want to hear even my favorite music/soloists at supernatural volume

-and I think audiences appreciate music they have to listen too more than music that's forced on them by amplification

Untrue.... Nothing destroys a sound like poorly done amplification. You
want quality sound, you aren't going to get it from any of these products.
A pickup on a clarinet is like a pickup on a stringed instrument. It sounds
nothing like the instrument in real life in a room.

There are plenty of ways (many of which I've discussed on this list- do a
search) to get good amplified sound out of a clarinet. It may not be cheap,
but it can be done. The best way to do it really depends on what you are
trying to get out of the amplification and the type of group it is.
