Hi Penny,

Sorry I'm so late in responding...I'm at an academic library...and we
don't offer downloads of audio books, so I don't have experience in this
arena. I imagine that the licensing agreements are different for audio
books. Perhaps these were created with libraries in mind, as a market.
Mp3s, and other such formats, in my estimation, were not. Many libraries
(we do) subscribe to collections of streamed audio recordings....but these
have to be used through the library's web page....our vendor does enable
the user to download selections to their mobile device, but this
functionality will be disabled after 24 (or is it 48) hours. My library,
however, doesn't own these sound files. I would guess that maybe your
library doesn't own the downloads of the audio books, either, but, again,
I'm uninformed on that issue..

So, the question remains...who's archiving, preserving the cultural record
in these cases? Probably not the vendors. There track record is pretty
poor in this area...

Cheers,
Daryll

Thank you Daryll. This is very good information to know! We plan to try
for the physical CD, with availability of digital downloads, as well, as
long as we have the funds for the production.

I know my library offers downloads of audio books, though not of music.
Do you know if and/or why this is handled differently?

Penny
