Dan
I watched the broadcast with total delight. It was Wynton Marsalis's 3rd
Symphony " The Swing Symphony", a tribute piece tracing the evolution the
swing style of jazz. The piece was scored for full orchestra plus a jazz
orchestra. The extra players were members of the Lincoln Center Jazz
Society Orchestra, headed by Wynton.
All in all, I thought the piece was well done and some incredible playing
by all members of both orchestras.
I stayed awake through Don Juan, but wished I would have made it through
the Hindemith piece. I have fond memories of doing the band version with
the Pennsylvania All State Band back in the 70's and had a ball playing it.
I'm toying with doing it with my youth symphony in the next few years as
it's a wonderful piece of music that needs to be played more often.
