I want to reply even though I don't have much to offer.

I enjoyed most of the embellishments. for example.. pickup to 120. I thought it was appropriate being the 2nd time that phrase is played. I also liked what I think is called an eingang based on discussion I've read on here at measure 127. There was one interval somewhere in there I didn't like but overall i felt it was appropriate. However, I did not like the one at measure 315. I felt uneasy when I heard it. I think there were too many notes in it.

There were 2 places that I heard a single grace note one of them is measure 306 right before beat 1 and the other happened somewhere in the developement. I disliked those. My opinion is that I can't really argue if he wants to do those but then I think they should happen more than twice so that it can be a style thing and not just 2 random grace notes. I also felt they were out of place since in the 2nd movement the "grace notes" are meant to be played on the beat. (thats called an appogiatura right?) I also play them on the beat in the 3rd movement so I felt since the rest of the piece is on the beat so should the 1st movement. that is only my opinion though.

When I have dynamics I think of them on 2 levels. The dynamic of a whole section and then "fine tuning" dynamics that go from note to note and measure to measure. I thoguht his sectional dynamics were great. However, I felt that the smaller scale dynamics were odd. At some points I felt like notes disappeared or almost that he was sucking in the clarinet to produce the note rather than blowing through it. I'm sure it was intended that way, I just didnt like it.

I also disliked the lower register. I've never played a Basset(t) clarinet so I don't know whats possible and what the differences are. So this might not even be possible. I prefer (I don't know how to describe this well) a bite to the lower register. I felt like some of the lower notes sounded like a veil was put over them and they were put through a meat grinder.

When I type this I think it seems like I'm talking as his teacher or something and that I could do it better, but I can't. Just so everyone understands.

Tom
