OOps! That is latch-key. Googling lock and key kid does bring up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latchkey_kid

I disagree with wikipedias indication that middle income children are
not significantly affected by being a latchkey kid. I am not sure we
were middle income, but we were definitely in a lower income
neighborhood, so my consorts were not middle income. The other thing
about the wikipedia article I disagree with is that independence and
self-reliance are positive effects. Independence and self-reliance
may be an effect of this, but it is not *inherently* positive. On may
need to consider it positive for the sake of dealing with a
socio-economic situation, or it may be positive, if the kid's health
is not in jeopardy. However, there are definitely risks that need to
be taken into consideration. In my case, it was unhealthy.

For a bit I went to a babysitters, I think that was kindergarten.
There were problems with that too. So, I do not have recommendations
for anyone. I am simply pointing out issues that need to be taken
into account.
