Yes I use it (professional version, about 2 years old so might not be the
very latest) quite often. It works, but not 100%. As with scanning it
depends on the quality of the original. There's usually (on straightforward
works) one or two rhythm errors per page, usually resulting from reading
something else as a semibreve, and it surprisingly often gets clefs wrong.
But it is a lot less work then inputting from scratch, and I would not do
without it.

Uhhhhhh, I find you were asking about Smartscore/Finale, whereas I was
talking about Neuatron/Sibelius. Ah well, someone else might find this post
useful!

Smartscore lite, which is included with Finale, won't convert PDF files but
the full version claims to do so. Ha anyone out there used it; I fancy the
idea but don't want to spend that much money without knowing how well it
works.

Whatever music scanning program you might use you will want absolutely the
best input you can get to minimize errors. I don't know about Smartscore or
others, but Photoscore, which is the program paired with Sibelius will take
PDF input (I think directly in the latest version and with some accessory
program in earlier versions). If at all possible, if there is a PDF file
available online, you should try to input directly rather than going through
another print/scan cycle.
